About Dr. Dennis Godby

was started in May, 2007 by Dr. Dennis Godby, M.A., N.M.D.,
a California-licensed, diabetes-focused
naturopathic medical doctor, on a mission to reverse the
world-wide epidemic of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome
(Syndrome X), and insulin resistance, and to significantly
improve the outcomes of people with type 1 diabetes. Dr. Godby's passion is helping individuals to live to their
fullest potential, by optimizing their health, so that they
have the energy and vitality to live their dreams.
Dr Godby continues to ask his favorite question, why? Why
has the rate of diabetes increased by a whopping 41% in just
six years? The answer, of course, is not a change in
genetics in just 6 years, or a super virulent infection, but
the continual deterioration in the lifestyle for many of the
world’s people. But that is the good news, believes Dr.
Godby, because if lifestyle is the primary cause of the
dramatic increase, it is also the solution.
The roots of Dr. Godby’s passion for reversing the
diabetes epidemic, began while designing a diabetes natural
medicine treatment plan for his mother, and witnessing her
struggle to understand how to implement her doctor’s
treatment plan of “diet and exercise,” and “take these
pills.” Dr. Godby’s research into a natural diabetes diet
and natural medicine for diabetes led to his interest in
becoming a naturopathic medical doctor. During this time
period, he began to remember the struggle of: his aunt who
had diabetes while he was a child, which eventually led to
her premature death; his cousin who lost most of his leg to
amputation from diabetes; and witnessing the frustrations
and agony of many other family members and friends with
diabetes.
Dr. Godby has seen, felt, and heard the struggle of
people with diabetes. As a naturopathic student in Portland,
he worked at a low-income clinic with mostly Hispanic
patients for three years, where at least half of the
patients were diagnosed with diabetes, or treated for
diabetes, pre-diabetes, insulin resistance or metabolic
syndrome. His fluency in Spanish and love for the Hispanic
culture, immersed him even more into the diabetes world. The
results of natural medicine that he witnessed were so
amazing, he wrote his doctoral thesis on, Preventing Type 2
Diabetes, Naturopathically, On a Budget.
Being a social change activist, teacher for two decades,
and preventative medicine-focused throughout his entire
life, he is now on a life-long mission to treat, prevent,
and reverse diabetes. Dr. Godby is: a board-certified,
California-licensed, naturopathic medical doctor, the
founder and director of Diabetes Natural Path Center, a
credentialed complementary practitioner with the Sutter
Center for Integrative Health, a former Diabetes Wellness
Coach for Sutter Health, all in Sacramento; a member of the
Board of Directors for California Naturopathic Doctors
Association, nutrition teacher and health columnist for a
local newspaper.
Dr. Godby’s passion for prevention began as a child; as
an exercise physiology college student and passionate about
promoting exercise, and eating nutritiously, he embarked on
a SOLO run, in 1978, from Corvallis, Oregon, to Calgary,
Canada, without a support crew, in 1978, at a time when
events of this kind were almost unheard of - running an
average 39 miles per day, for 37 days, over the Northern
Cascades and Canadian Rockies, a total of 1,420 miles.
Six years later, in 1984, to promote peace in Central
America, Dr Godby ran across America, from San Francisco to
Washington, D.C., a 3,006 mile campaign, in 112 days.
Speaking in town hall meetings, and to the press, daily, the
motivation for this run was less about exercise, and more
about promoting compassion, social justice, and peacemaking.
Dr. Godby received a B.S. from Oregon State University,
in exercise physiology and nutrition, and a Master’s of Arts
in Theological Studies, from the Maryknoll School of
Theology. For the next seven years, he taught social
justice, spirituality and peacemaking in the religious
studies department of two parochial high schools.
After witnessing his mother’s struggle with diabetes, he
made a difficult decision to leave teaching, and pursue a
naturopathic medical degree, so that he could medically help
the people of the world to overcome what appeared (and
continues to appear) to be one of the most significant
epidemics in history – type 2 diabetes.
The struggle for health and vitality continues.
